The Huron County Library and Scientists in School present free, hands-on virtual STEM workshops for kids ages 4-12. Hosted through live and interactive video, kids can work along with real scientists to learn more about science.

REGISTRATION: Space is limited. Please fill out our online questionnaire to register. The session activity kits will be available for pickup at the branches at least one week before the session.

SESSIONS:

Friday, Feb. 2, 2 p.m.: Do It Like da Vinci!: Da Vinci was an accomplished artist and skilled architect, and you can be, too. Paint to explore solubility, absorption, and surface tension. Become an inventor by taking our structure building challenge, and create a catapult. Discover the joy of combining science and art!

Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m.: Obey Newton: It’s the Law!: Sir Isaac Newton was one smart dude! Explore Newton’s Laws of Motion as you investigate how things either move or stay put, and how every action produces a reaction. Race a waterdrop to the finish line and discover the effects of gravity on your very own tumble bunny!

Monday, March 11, 1 p.m.: Science Snippets: Enjoy a few snippets of science! Be a chemist and discover the difference between baking soda and powder. Create a fantastical creature while investigating dominant and recessive genes. Make a pompom launcher and explore physics. Discover aeronautics by building and testing a plane. A snippet is just the beginning!

Wednesday, March 13, 1 p.m.: Ewww… that Science is Gross: Discover the science behind things that make you go…ewww! Make “snot” and sneeze it while exploring viscosity, identify various animals from their scat (i.e. poop) and learn about digestion while producing a burp in a bag. Join us on a gross but fun-filled science adventure!

Saturday, March 16, 10 a.m.: Ride ‘n’ Roll with Science: Welcome to the amusement park where we’ll be bumping, spinning, zipping and rolling! Discover the actions and reactions of bumper cars. Explore the forces at work when you spin. Create a zipline while investigating gravity. Design a roller coaster to meet a challenge. It’s all about the physics of riding ‘n’ rolling!
