Seed Library
The Seed Library is available to Huron County Library patrons looking to get growing! Check out seeds from the library, plant them at your home and enjoy the fruits of your labours. At the end of the growing season, collect seeds from a few plants and return them to the library. Then next season, pick up more seeds to keep growing!
To access the seeds, please complete the form below, choosing up to 5 seeds. Once staff receive the form, we will process your request and contact you when they are available for pickup at your local branch. Please note that processing may take up to a week.
Seed Saving
It’s the end of another growing season and a great time to save seeds to donate to the Huron County Library’s Seed Library.
- Choose seeds from the healthiest plants that are pollinated by insects, wind or other natural means.
- Make sure you have permission before gathering seeds. If gathering from native species, only gather 10%, leaving enough for natural dispersal and for food for birds and small animals.
- Ensure seeds are completely dry before packaging.
- Package seeds in a bag or envelope, ensuring one seed variety per package.
- Label each package with seed name and variety, harvest year and location, notes about the plants that you would like to share.
- Drop off seed donations to staff at any HCL location to share with the community next year. Please do not drop off seeds through the book returns.
