The Huron County Library and Scientists in School present free, hands-on virtual STEM workshops for kids ages 4-12. Hosted through live and interactive video, kids can work along with real scientists to learn more about science.

REGISTRATION: Space is limited. Email askalibrarian@huroncounty.ca to register. Please include the session your are signing up for (listed below), your name, email address and local branch so we can arrange pick-up of the science kit and send you the workshop link.

SESSIONS:

Saturday, Dec. 10, 10 a.m.: Ewww…That Science is Gross: Discover the science behind things that make you go…ewww! Make “snot” and sneeze it while exploring viscosity, identify various animals from their scat (i.e. poop) and learn about digestion while producing a burp in a bag. Join us on a gross but fun-filled science adventure! Register by Friday, Dec. 2.

Saturday, Jan. 14, 10 a.m.: Science Meets Art: Discover what happens when science meets art! Explore perception as you use shadows, colour, motion, and light to create art from science. You’ll make a puppet, a spinning top and a kaleidoscope, as well as design your own galaxy. Register by Friday, Jan. 6.

Saturday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m.: Investigate It!: Become a forensic scientist and investigate this whodunit by examining clues left at the scene! Learn how to interpret evidence by exploring fabric samples and running a chemical analysis on a mystery solution. Take your own fingerprints and compare them to those left behind. Use chromatography to analyze the ink used in a mysterious note. Will you identify the culprit? Register by Friday, Feb. 3.

Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m.: Noticing Nature: Chicka-dee-dee-dee. Who was that? Play a game to discover nature sounds around us. Buzz your newly created bee around flowers to pollinate them. Investigate seeds and make a seed caterpillar that will grow over time. Notice all that nature has to offer, big and small! Register by Friday, March 3.
